Who makes it
BackgroundReplacer is built and looked after by a small independent team in India that makes browser-based image tools. The same people read and answer the messages sent through the contact page.
Why the work happens on your device
Removing a background used to mean sending your photo to someone else's server and trusting what happened to it there. Browsers can now run detection models themselves, so we built the editor to do exactly that. Your picture is read into the page, cut out and composed in the tab, and saved back to your disk.
That choice has practical upsides beyond privacy. Once the model is cached after your first cutout on this device, the editor can keep working without a connection, there is no upload wait for large files, and there is no server bill that would push us toward credits or sign-ups.
What it does
The whole product is organized around one question: what should sit behind your subject.
- Finds the subject of a photo automatically, using a person model or an object model.
- Lets you refine the cutout with brushes, edge controls and inspection views.
- Puts transparency, a color, a gradient, a blurred scene, a preset or your own picture behind the subject.
- Handles layout, shadows and simple lighting matching so the result looks settled.
- Exports PNG, JPEG or WebP at the pixel size of your original on most devices, singly or as a batch, with print size and file-size targets for documents.
What it deliberately leaves out
It is not a general photo editor; there are no retouching, text or drawing tools beyond what a background job needs. It does not generate images from text prompts. It does not work on video. There are no accounts, because there is nothing about you that the tool needs to store on our side.
Honest limits
Detection is good with clear subjects and weaker with glass, smoke, motion blur, fine hair on busy backgrounds, subjects whose colors blend into the scene, very dark photos and overlapping people. The refinement tools exist for exactly those cases. Speed depends on your device, and older phones will take longer, especially on the larger object model.
If something goes wrong or a photo trips the editor up, the contact page is the place to tell us.
