Drop a photo of a car and it lands in a showroom: a clean wall, a floor that recedes to a horizon, the car's reflection in it and a shadow under the tyres. Change the car photo background to a dark showroom or a soft blur of the original street in one tap.
A car background changer built around the floor
Most cut-outs look pasted on because nothing connects the car to the ground. This page starts from the floor. The object model finds the car, then the editor sets a wide 16:9 canvas, scales the car to 85% of the width and stands it a little above the bottom edge, on a floor plane that meets the wall at a horizon line.
The contact shadow under the tyres flattens to match that floor: the closer the car stands to the horizon, the thinner the shadow, as it would be in a real photograph. The floor also carries the car's reflection, faded with distance, and Gloss sets how polished it looks.
Three showrooms to start from
Each one is drawn on your device at the size you export, so a 4,000-pixel listing photo is as clean as the preview. In the Background stage, Perspective floor has the horizon, the floor color, Gloss and optional perspective lines that look like floor tiles; the floor also works under any other background in the library. Compose offers 4:3 and other canvas shapes if a site asks for one.
- Light floor, white wall: a bright gray floor and a softly lit wall, the usual look for a dealer listing.
- Dark floor, gray wall: a deep floor with a stronger reflection, for evening or premium shots.
- Outdoor blur: no showroom at all; the original scene stays, blurred, so the car stands out from a busy street.
Number plates and other cars
Finish has a Privacy blur: drag a box over the number plate and it is blurred in the preview and in the downloaded file. It is the only change this editor makes inside the car itself, and only as a blur.
Street photos often catch a second car, a bollard or a person at the edge. In Cut out, Click to keep/drop removes a separate part of the result with one click, and clicking the same spot brings it back. If the detection found several separate subjects, they appear as chips you can switch on and off. For a small car in a wide photo, Detect in a box runs the model again on just the area you draw, at its full input size.
Limits worth knowing
The object model is an 84 MB download the first time, stored in your browser afterwards; the photo itself is never uploaded. Glass is hard for any cut-out: a windscreen that shows the old background through it keeps a hint of that scene, which a dark showroom hides better than a white one. Wheel arches and the shadowed gap under the car are worth checking with the On white and On black views. The reflection is a mirrored copy of the car, not a ray-traced one, so a car photographed from high above will not reflect perfectly. Check your listing site's rules on edited photos and image sizes before you post.
Step by step
- Open a car photo. The object model finds the car on this device and places it in the light showroom.
- Pick a showroom. Light floor, dark floor, or the original street blurred.
- Set the floor. Move the horizon and adjust Gloss so the reflection looks right.
- Hide the plate. In Finish, draw a privacy blur box over the number plate.
- Download. JPEG at full size for the listing, or PNG for later edits.
Questions people ask
Can I blur the number plate?
Yes. In Finish, choose Draw a blur box and drag over the plate. The blur is in the preview and in the downloaded file, and Remove last box takes it away again.
How do I get rid of another car or a person at the edge?
In Cut out, turn on Click to keep/drop and click the part you do not want. Clicking the same spot again brings it back, and each click can be undone.
Why does the reflection fade?
A real floor reflects less the farther it is from the car. The reflection follows the floor's horizon; raise Gloss for a polished showroom or lower it for concrete.
Which size should I export for a listing?
The page starts on a 16:9 canvas with the car at 85% of the width, exported at the photo's full resolution. Listing sites set their own sizes, so check the one you post on and pick a canvas in Compose.
Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?
No. The object model downloads to your browser once (84 MB) and the car is cut out on your device. Nothing about the photo is sent anywhere.
