The short version
Photos you open here are edited on your own device and are not uploaded to us. The site makes two kinds of request of its own: it downloads detection models to your browser when you start a cutout, and it sends the contact form only when you press Send. Cookie-free page-view statistics with Cloudflare Web Analytics are set up but switched off at the moment. There are no accounts and no ads.
What happens to a photo you open
When you open, drop or paste an image, the browser reads it from your device into this page. Detection, refinement, compositing and export all run inside the tab. The same applies to any background picture you add. Neither is sent to a server for processing, and we never see them. There is no upload fallback.
When you export, the finished file is saved by your browser to wherever you choose, or copied to your clipboard if you use that option. Camera and location details stored in the original photo are not written into the exported file.
Model downloads
To cut out a subject, the editor needs a detection model. Detection models are downloaded once from our model file server and kept in your browser; your photo is never sent there. The files are the person model (26 MB), the object model (84 MB) and a small face finder (0.2 MB) that Auto mode uses to pick between them. The size is shown before a download begins, nothing is fetched until you start a cutout, and models are never preloaded.
These are ordinary file requests. As with any web request, the server receives the technical details a browser always sends, such as your IP address and browser type.
Downloaded models are kept in your browser's cache, so later edits start faster and, after your first cutout on this device, can work offline. You can clear them at any time from the On-device AI panel in the editor, or by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
What is kept in your browser
Some information is stored in your browser's local storage on your device. It is not sent to us.
- An unfinished edit, kept for up to 24 hours so you can resume it. You can discard it from the editor whenever you like.
- Favorite backgrounds, recent colors and presets you save under My presets.
- Small interface preferences.
- Cached detection models, described above.
- Project files you save with the .backgroundreplacer extension go to your own disk, not to browser storage or to us.
Page-view statistics
BackgroundReplacer is set up to use Cloudflare Web Analytics, run by Cloudflare, the company that also hosts the site, but it is switched off at the moment: no statistics script loads and no visit is counted. When it is switched on, its small script will load only on the live site at backgroundreplacer.com, never on a preview build, a local copy or a saved copy of a page, and will report for each page view the page address, the page you came from, your browser and device type, your approximate country and how long the page took to load.
It sets no cookies, uses no local storage and does not follow you to other websites, and it will never receive your photo, its cutout, its file name or anything about the edit. This page will say so when it is on.
The contact form
The contact page has a form with fields for your name, email address and message. When you press Send, those three fields and this site's domain name are submitted to a Google Form that we use to receive messages. Nothing is sent before you press Send. We use what you write only to reply to you.
Hosting
The site is a set of static files served by Cloudflare. As with any website, the host processes your IP address and request details to deliver the pages and files you ask for.
Advertising
This site shows no advertising and carries no ad code. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated beforehand to explain which providers are involved and what they may collect.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the new version is posted on this page with a revised date at the top. Significant changes, such as adding advertising, will be described here before they take effect.
