This page removes white the moment your picture opens: no model, no download, no wait. White that touches the border goes; white inside the subject stays.
How the white is taken out
When you open a picture here, the editor samples its four corners, which on a logo, a scan or a product shot on a sweep are almost always the background. Every pixel close to that color and connected to the border becomes transparent. Pixels a little further away fade out over a soft band, and their color is un-blended from the white, so the rim of a dark letter becomes dark rather than staying a pale gray halo.
Because only connected white is removed by default, the inside of an O, the white of an eye on a mascot or the label on a bottle survives. Turn Connected only off to remove that white everywhere instead.
Controls that matter
- Tolerance: how far from pure white still counts as background. Raise it for off-white paper or a gray-ish sweep.
- Edge softness: the width of the fade at the boundary. A little keeps anti-aliased edges smooth.
- Pick a background color: click more spots to add samples, useful for a two-tone or shaded background.
- Also use the object model: for product photos where white also appears inside the product. The model protects what it is confident is the subject while the key removes the rest. It downloads the 84 MB object model once.
- Remove fringe: takes any remaining white spill out of soft edges.
Check it against dark colors
A white halo is invisible on a white page and obvious on a dark one. Before you save, switch the view to On black, or set the export preview to Black. If a pale rim shows, raise the tolerance a little or the fringe slider, then look again.
The default export is a transparent PNG at full size. WebP keeps transparency in a smaller file.
When to use a model instead
Removing a color works best when the background really is one color. A person photographed in front of a white wall usually is not: the wall has shadows, and white clothing touches it. For portraits and busy scenes, use the main remove background page, which detects the subject with a model and needs no clean backdrop. This page is for flat artwork, scans, screenshots and products shot on white.
Step by step
- Open the picture. The white is removed as soon as it opens.
- Adjust tolerance. Raise it for off-white or shaded backgrounds.
- Keep inner white. Leave Connected only on so white inside the design stays.
- Check on black. Look for a pale halo and use Remove fringe if one shows.
- Save a transparent PNG. Or WebP for a smaller file.
Questions people ask
Why did the white inside my logo stay?
Connected only is on, so only white joined to the edge of the picture is removed. Turn it off to remove that white everywhere, including enclosed areas.
My background is cream, not white. Will it work?
Yes. The key is sampled from the corners of your picture, not fixed to pure white. Raise the tolerance if parts of the background remain.
How do I get rid of the gray halo around edges?
Edge pixels are un-blended from the white automatically. If a rim remains, raise Remove fringe or the tolerance slightly and check the result on black.
Does this page download a model?
No. Color removal runs immediately and offline. Only the optional Also use the object model switch downloads a model.
Can I remove white from a product photo with a white label?
Turn on Also use the object model. Parts the model is sure belong to the product are kept even if they are white.
